Peloponnese Πελοπόννησος

Peloponnesian cooking is grounded in exceptional olive oil, bitter mountain greens, and robust clay-baker stews. Pork holds a prominent role alongside goat and lamb, often braised with tomatoes, pulses, or orchard fruit. Coastal communities focus on simply prepared seafood, while the interior favours heavier casseroles and cured meats. Venetians and Ottomans left modest impressions, yet the table remains intensely tied to the soil and seasonal foraging, resulting in austere, hearty flavours with generous acidity and wild herbs.

What grows here

Extensive olive groves dominate the plains and coastal hills, supplemented by citrus orchards in the valleys. Smallholders herd goats and sheep in the rugged mountain ranges and cultivate vineyards and currants.

Influences: byzantine, ottoman, venetian, albanian.

Best time to eat

Visit in late autumn for the olive harvest, freshly pressed oil, and wild mushroom foraging.
